One student has died while 139 others are nursing injuries at different hospitals after a stampede in the University of Nairobi, Kikuyu Campus.
The stampede was caused by the explosion of underground electricity cables.
The incident, which took place at 5.15am this morning, saw students, both male and female, who were being housed at the nearby Kimberly Hostel scampering out of the hostel after they mistook the explosion for a terrorist attack.
Of those injured, 101 are being treated at the Kenyatta National Hospital, 37 are being attended to at PCEA Kikuyu Hospital while two others were taken to Karen Hospital where one of them, a third year student, succumbed to his injuries.
Police now say that the situation at the campus has since calmed down.
Reports from witnesses indicate that some students jumped from top floors in an attempt to escape the “attack”.
The country has been on high alert since the Garissa University attack that took place barely a week ago claiming 147 lives.
The attack on the campus is the biggest blow Islamist extremists have dealt to the country since the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. kbc
