12 DEAD IN PARIS MASSACRE: Islamic gunmen execute French police officer as he pleads for his life after terror attack on satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo at centre of Mohammed cartoon storm

Twelve people were killed today when gunmen carried out a 'massacre' at the offices of a notoriously anti-Islamist newspaper in Paris - including a police officer who was executed as he begged for mercy on the pavement. Three masked attackers brandishing Kalashnikovs burst into the Charlie Hebdo headquarters, opening fire on staff after seeking out journalists by name. Those executed included four of the most famous cartoonists in France – men who had regularly satirised Islam and the Prophet Mohammed – including the newspaper's editor-in-chief, Stephane Charbonnier. Witnesses said the suspect Al Qaeda killers were heard to shout 'the Prophet has been avenged' and 'Allahu akbar!' as they stalked the building. Horrific footage also emerged showing an injured police officer slumped on the pavement outside the office as two of the gunmen approach. In an apparent desperate plea for his life, the officer is seen slowly raising his hand towards one

The blast happened Tuesday outside a barber shop that’s next door to the group’s office, which is about an hour south of Denver. There were no injuries and only minor damage, police said. An improvised explosive device was detonated against the building, but it was too soon to know whether the nation’s oldest civil rights organisation was the target, FBI  spokeswoman Amy Sanders said. The agency sent members of its Joint Terrorism Task Force to help investigate. Sanders said investigators were looking for a balding white man in his 40s who may be driving a d

Piano stores closing across US as kids snub lessons for other activities

Sales decline accelerates as businesses dedicated to the instrument dwindle and music learners opt for less expensive electronic keyboards or used pianos Fewer people are taking up piano lessons and those who do often choose a less expensive electronic keyboard. Photograph: Alamy When Jim Foster opened his piano store 30 years ago, he had 10 competitors selling just pianos. When he closed Foster Family Music in late December, not one was still selling pianos in the Quad-Cities area of  Iowa  and Illinois. “We did try hard to find a buyer,” Foster said. There were no takers. Stores dedicated to selling pianos like Foster’s are dwindling across the country as fewer people take up the instrument and those who do often opt for a less expensive electronic keyboard or a used piano. Some blame computers and others note the high cost of new pianos, but what’s clear is that a long-term decline in sales has accelerated. The best year for new piano sales in the US was 1909, when mor
