Driver ordered to compensate accident victims’ families

The Speed Governors and Road Safety association is asking the driver of the matatu that killed 10 people in an accident in Embu to bear responsibility for the deaths.
The association says preliminary observation indicate that the speed governor installed in the matatu belonging to Neno sacco was faulty while the driver was speeding and overtaking at a dangerous point.

They spoke even as the roads claimed nine more deaths across parts of the country.
Speaking in Embu town after visiting the scene of the accident and interviewing those who survived the crash, Gitonga said they had established that the matatu regular driver had called in sick and was replaced by an inexperienced person.
He said the number of accidents had reduced since the government introduced digital speed governors but some drivers were tampering with the gadgets.
Road Association of Kenya chairman David Kiarie urged the National Transport and Safety Authority to take action against the sacco.
He also faulted the Law Society of Kenya for opposing laws by NTSA meant to streamline the transport sector.
Elsewhere, four people were this morning killed in a road accident that occurred along the Meru-Isiolo Road involving a matatu and a trailer, in an incident linked to fatigue by the driver.
Five others were injured in the accident which occurred when a Townace public service vehicle rammed into the rear side of a trailer that was moving on the same direction at about 3 am at Mungania area.
Separately five people died and three others critically injured today after a lorry carrying sugarcane overturned near the Nambale trading centre in Busia County.
According to witnesses the driver also lost control of the truck carrying nine people on the sharp bend while heading to Nambale town.
The lorry rolled several times before landing into a ditch killing the five on the spot.
Four of the victims were sugarcane cutters and the lorry driver.- KBC

The threat by the al-Qaida affiliate came in the final minutes of a more than hourlong video released Saturday in which the extremists also warned Kenya of more attacks like the September 2013 assault on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi in which 67 people were killed. The masked narrator concluded by calling on Muslims to attack shopping malls, specifically naming the Mall of America in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington, as well as the West Edmonton Mall in Canada and the Westfield mall in Stratford, England. The authenticity of the video could not be immediately verified by The Associated Press. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security provided local law enforcement agencies and private sec...
